I am a graduate student in comparative literature. I work in English, Arabic, Irish and French under the direction of Professor Mary Layoun. I am currently working on my dissertation: “Embedded Calls: Locating Ethical Responses in Contemporary Narratives of Violence.” I am interested in how positions of consent are cultivated within representations of violence and how they may alternatively construct challenges to the violence represented and invoke accountability before it. Examining contemporary narratives of violence regarding Ireland, Palestine and the “war on terror,” I analyze the ethical responses contained within the textually generated position of the implied reader.
